Inaugural Channing Lecture
Celebrates Religious Rebels
Saturday 22nd October 2011, 6pm

Golders Green Unitarians, 31 1/2 Hoop Lane,
London, NW11 8BS (near the Central Hotel)

In this inaugural Channing Lecture, honouring William Ellery Channing (1780-1842), whose personality, writings and example have been so influential in liberal religious thinking for almost two centuries, Alan Ruston, one of our foremost Unitarian historians known for his lively, witty and erudite talks, will talk about the colourful personalities of individual Unitarians who stood up as free spirits and religious rebels down the centuries.

Unitarians take their religion liberally and our liberty to worship freely has been hard won. Unitarianism in Great Britain remained illegal until 1813. Originally dissenters who questioned the dogma of the Trinity, Unitarians today maintain that questioning and dissenting spirit and now embrace a broad spectrum of belief from liberal Christianity to a Universalism, religious humanism and Earth centred spirituality.

Golders Green Unitarians welcome you!

If you are a spiritual seeker interested in liberal approaches to religion and spirituality in the modern world please come and hear about the individual pioneers and diverse personalities of those who stood up for the right of conscience and free religious thought. Unitarians were also pioneers in accepting women and gay people in the religious ministry in the face of conventional hostility. Unitarians and Universalists have embraced women ministers since the 1860s in the US and in Britain since 1904. In 1926 Joyce Daplyn, Golders Green Unitarians' minister, organised an international ecumenical conference on welcoming women in the ministry. In 1971 Golders Green Unitarians ran an encounter group for gay and heterosexual people to break down barriers. Alan’s lecture celebrates this radical and life affirming liberal religious heritage and the personalities of those who made it possible.
